¡ g H I S Bird is about the.: iize of, or
rather bigger than a Lark: The Bill
black and tliick : The iris of the Eye
red : The Head, Neck, Breaft, Back,
and Tail, black ; ;as are the Wings,
with thè Jarger Quill-Feathers edged
with white. The lower part of the Breaft
and ' Belly white ; which,- on each lìdé, is o f’a
muddy red, extending. along its Wings. The Legs
and Feet are brown.
' The Hen is brownv with a tin&ure of red on her
Breaft.. -It is a folitary Bird*, and one ieldom fees
them but in Pairs. -\ They breed and abide all the
Year in Carolina in the ihadieft Woods.

L a Fêmelle eft brune» avec une loger e teinture
de rouge fur la poitrine. Cet Oijeau eft folitaire.
On ne les voit guère que par couple. I l demeure
pendant toute Vannée à la Caroline dans lès Bois
les pltcs épais.

y*—g—\ H I S Bird is entirely brown, the Back
■ v ■ being darkeft, and the Breaft ànd Belly
JaL- the lighteft part of it. In Winter they
aifociate with,thé Red-wing’d Starling and Purple
Jack-daW in Flights. They dejight much to feed in
the Pens of Cattle, whicn has given them their
Name. Not having feen' any of them in Summer,
I believe they are Birds of Paiiàge. They inhabit
Virginia and Carolina. .

En Hyver i l s’àffociè W-fait bande avec VEtourneau
aux ailes rouges, & lefChoucas. lift épiait beaucoup
fe nourrit dans les Tares des Beftiaux, & c’eft
de là qu’il a pris fon nom Anglois. f e rien ai point
vu en E té :, Ainftjecrois que c'eft un G if eau de Taf-
fage. Ilfe trouve à la Virginie & à la Caroline.

T ""' H I S Tree grows only ntfar Rivers, above the inhabited
-*• parts o f Carolina. They are large and very tall. In
April, at which time only I law, them, they had dropt their
-Seeds'; which, by the Remains, I could only perceive to hang
in „Chillers, with a Cotton-like Conliftenee covering them.
Upon-the large fwelling Buds o f this Tree flicks a very odoriferous,
Balfam. The leaves are indented about the edges, and
very'bi^ad,'relembling in fhape the Black Poplar, defcribed
