S P E C I F I C CHARACTER.
Hypoxis folds linearibus, glabris, c a n a l i c u l a r s,
longiore fcapo unifloro; corolla in t u s áurea,
ex t u s viridis.
Hypoxis with linear leaves, fmootb, channelled,
a n d longer than the flower-ftem, which
has b u t o n e flower; blolfom orange within,
g r e e n without.

A T firft, we had fome doubts whether this p l a n t tliould not b e confidered as a variety of Hypoxis flell
a t a , to w h i c h it undoubtedly affines; but, upon d u e examination, find it a diflinft and n ew fpecies;
as well, from the i h a p e and l e n g t h of the leaves, as t h e i h a p e , character, and colour of the bloffom,
a n d figure of t h e root.
L i k e Hypoxis ttellata it is a native of t h e Cape of Good Hope, and was introduced, from thence,
by Meflrs. Lee a n d Kennedy, in the y e a r For its t r e a t m e n t , ice. we muft refer our readers to
t h e above fpecies, PI. 101. Vol. 2. Our d r a w i n g was t a k e n in M a r c h 1801 from a p l a n t in t h e H i b -
b e r t i a n Coüe&ion, C l a p b am Common. The flower of this plant, like many of the Ixias, &c. is
expanded but a few h o u r s each day, a n d that only, whilft under the influence of a flrong morning
f u n ; as, i f t h e w e a t h e r is gloomy, it keeps clofe fhut, but does not fpeedily decay, for i t will contin
u e to open, w i t h equal brilliancy, for e i g h t or t e n days.
