inds we have taken up a fpecific diftinâion
fo diflimilar in our opinion, but, which havi
T H A T a jcift judgment may be formed, upon what 1
between the only two fpecies we pollers of this genu..,
been conlidered as fearcely to be deemed varieties, by much abler botanifts than ourfelves profefs to
b e ; we have given the figures of both in confeqnence. Much is it to be regretted, that the whole nat
u r a l order of plants forming the A pací near of Juflieu, fo charactered in themfelves, have not undergone
a proper revifion, in claHificntion, upon the original Linntean sexual principles; which, we mull
luppole, have been left in the prelent bewildered chaos, from the intricacy, Angularity and minute-
Ben of t h e parts, being fo difficult to dcvelope. From critical and actual obfervalions, taken from
the living p l a n ' s , we are in hopes of being able to illuftrate, and correct where rjeceflary, the characters
ot fuch as may come under our review.
Upon the changing t h e clals of this genus, there needs no c o m m e n t ; as moft authors seem to
allow, though they have not followed the hint, that it is properly Gynandrous; although they have not
equally agreed as to t h e O r d e r ; fome t a k i n g the glands, furroimding the fummit, for the chives, and Come, for t h e iuminits themfelves, of a columnar lhaft. Dr. Smith, who has figured our other fpecies,
has j u l t ly taken, the parts fixed to the live glands, for what they certainly are; as may be eafily traced
t h r o u g h the whole order of Orchidcae, where the chives are nearly fimilarly placed and fo hooded.
1 he Genus is by no means new, in name, having been fo tilled by Linn-eus, from the names of
Pergulans and Pergulanui of Burman and Rumphius; who derived them from the ufe made of the
p l a n t s by t h e natives, of the w< ftern coa ft o f the peninfula of I n d i a ; where, ihey are cultivated to
form arbors, for the agreeable flavour of their flowers. This fpecies was firft introduced about the
year j y 8 4 , by Sir Jofeph Banks, Rart. fome lime before the other fpecies; wherefore, we have given
it t h e preference. Il is propagated by c u t t i n g s , a n d l h o u l d be treated i n t h e fame manner as directed
for the Cratanra capparoides of our laít Number, to have it flower in perfection. The figures of both
fpecies were taken, in Augnlt, from two plants in the collection of J . Vere, Efq. Kenlington Gore;
where, Mr. Anderibn (to whom we mull beg our finccrc acknowledgments for bis frequent and ready
obfervatiooi and alfiliance) informs us, they are treated in fuch manner.
