t o the d a i s Gynandria b y Linnaeus, has been fo continued by Martyn, 8tc. tint upon what grounds, we
a r e unable t o d e t e r m i n e ; unlets t h e m i l t a k e a r o l e from t h e impracticability of d i v i d i n g t h e t u b e o f t he
chives, from the ihaft, in a dried tpecimen; which, in Inch tranfitory flowers as thofe of Ferraria,
SilYriitchiiim. Galaxia, ice. all o f t h i s elafs, feem, in that lime, to foim a perfc& unifon. Schrebcr
has referred I befe Genera, in hi, Ed. of Linn, Cíen. Plant, to where they certainly mult Irand, to MoniKelphia.
But, a l t h o u g h we h a t e c o n t i n u e d the plant u n d e r t h e t i t l e by which it is generally known,
i r om an adherence to o u r original principle ; yet do we think, it equally necotfary to fíate our opinion,
wbv we r o u n d e r its geneiical reference t o have been as ill t a k e n up, as t h e Genus h i d been ill claflilied.
This plant, as may be feet: from our dilfections, is much nigher alHnetl lo Sifyrinrhiuin, as it
wants every e d e n t t a l c h a r a c t e r of Ferraria, luch a s a (heath of one leaf, undulated crilped petals,
hooded and fringed fummits, &c. for we do not con filler the length of the t u b e of tiie blolfom of any
moment, as it is not contl.int. Xoiv, every d i f t i n g u i t h i n g feature " f Sifyiiuchium a r e h e r e e x t a n t , viz.
a flieath of two leaves, flat or plain petals, fummits neither hooded or f r i n g e d ; but our figure will
b e l t e r e x p l a i n , than words, thefe i t r o n g marked ditferences. II indeed we were t o give a n opinion, it
c e r t a i n l y would not be in coincidence w i t h T h u n b e r g , by placing the whole Genus to Morasa; but to
c r e a t e a n ew one f r om this p l a n t ; u hole w h o l e t i r u e h i r e , but efperi.iily from the Nectaria or honeycups
upon the margin of the inner petals. Hands eminently diflinguiihed from all others.

about the year 1JÜ7; but is n ow found in moll collections round the. Metropolis. It is increafed by
t h t feed, which ripens in this c l i m a t e , a n d ftom t h e root, which m .kes a b u n d a n c e of offsets. T h e flowers
expand in rotation, three or four upon each Hem at the interval of a lew days ¡ the Hem growing to
t h e h e i g h t of S t o u t t w o feet. So very rapid is t h e progrefs of t h e blolfom in its decay, from the time
of its o p e n i n g , which is generally about feven o'clock in the morning j that before twelve, the luflre
i s g o n e , a n d it is q i i t e decayed by t h r e e , or four. Our d r a w i n g was made a t t h e Hammerfmilh Nnrfery
in J u l y ; and Hill there were a number of flower Hems, which had not, as yet, made an appeara
n c e of flowering. It is belt grown in peat e a r t h.
