T H E cnaft of Africa bordering on our fettlement at Sierra Leone, has furniihed us with a number of
beautiful p l a n t s ; but none more fo, than tbofe of the natural order of Lily; witnefs our prefent
figure, which was taken from a plant in t h e Hammcrfmith collection, in the month of Auguft 1 8 0 0 .
T h e bulbs of this grand fpceies of C r i n u m , were received by her Ladyfiup, the Right Honourable the
March ion el's of Rockingham, about the year 1702, from Sierra Leone; they may be confidered as hardy
hothoufe plants, and may be kept in any part of i t ; will flower, freely, about the month of Auguft,
t h e flower-flems riling, fonietitues, to t h e h e i g h t of three feet. A m i x t u r e , of leaf mould, or faudy
peat one half, and light loam t h e other, is t h e b e d compoft to make t h em flourifh. It is propagated
from the feed, or offsets. Having made a fmall alteration, in the Elfential Character of the Genus;
and as it is l i k e l y we may figure fome other fpecies of Crinums fiiortly; we think it Decenary to add
a few words, to that point. The molt oftcnfible difference, we have been able to trace, in comparing
above 4 0 fpecies of Crinums and Amaryllis's, and on which to reft, with certainty, for genericnl diffraction;
can, unqueltionably, be t a k e n only, from the feeds; as thefe in moft fpecies of Pancratium,
Hafmanthus, and all of this Genus, are viviparous or formed like flefliy bulbs, producing plants, like
offsets taken from the original bulbs. From Pancratium it is diftinct, in being d e i t i t u t e of the Honeyc
u p ; and equally fo from H a i n a n t h u s , which has its fheath of many leaves, the flowers and chives
u p r i g h t , and the chives, twice the l e n g t h of the bloffoms.
