I t is a c l i m b i n g p l a n t , the branches a c q u i r i n g a contiderable l e n g t h , t h e bark b e i n g coveted with
fontll tubercles, l i k e g l a n d s , and the y o u n g e r branches c o w e d , their whole length, with blollbms.
A l t h o u g h this is not to be reckoned amonglt the handfumcft of the productions of that c o u n t r y , yet,
f r om t h e lively c o l o u r o f t h e flower-, the profulion of t h em which t h e plant produces, a n d t h e i r c o n t
i n u e d fticceliioii, from April, till September, it m u l l be f o u n d e r e d as a valuable addition to the (mall
n u m b e r of fcandent plants, as yet in o u r g r e e n - h o u f e s ; more p a r t i c u l a r l y at the prefent j u n c t u r e , when,
f r om fafliion, a t r e l l i s has become a ncceilary a p p e n d a g e to them. It is propagated from the feeds,
w h i c h ripen in this c o u n t r y ; as well as from cuttings, which lhonld be made in May, and kept
in t h e h e a l of a c u c u m b e r - f r a m e , or hot-hemic, till they a r e rooted. It is g r o w n bell in l a n d y peat.

n a m e , Pogonia, is derived from the appearance of the month of the flower which is bearded;
