T H E Genus Brunsfelfia (by P l u n d e r fo named, in honour of O t h o llrnnsfels a monk, the firfi who
edited in 1.530 a Botanical work with good figures, it contained 238 plates) has undergone a very
nccelfary revilion fince the days of Linnaeus; indeed, it appears Angular [hat Father Plumier, from
w h o m Linnaeus quotes his G e n e r i c i h a r a c i e r , Ihould have committed fo great au o v e r h g h t , as to
defcribe it w i t h five chives; a feature fcareely t o be expected, from a fport of n a t u r e , in p l a n t s of this
Clafs. So however it is on record, and the fifth Clafi of the Gen. and Spe. Plant, and of the Syft.
N a t . torn. ii. each includes this G e n u s ; from w h i c h , we (liould be induced to t h i n k he had defigned
fomc other p l a n t : if the figure, and the reft of the defcription, did not confirm it. Schreber, in
liis fien. Plant, has l i k e w i f e an obfervalion, that the fruit ihould be named a capfule, ratlier than a
b e r r y ; as given by Linna:us, Miller, and Swartz; his realbn, that it lp]its determinately, by a future,
from the top to the bafe.
O u r fpecies, is the t h i r d n e w in B r i t a i n ; they are all natives of the Weft India Iflands. The
1ft B. americaua has been long an inhabitant of o u r h o t h o u l e s ; the 2d B. maculata is b a t l i t t le known
to moll, though long cultivated h e r e ; as it has been treated as a variety ot the rirlt fpecies, notwithflanding
the ftrong fpecitic difference, in the ftinpe of the leaves and blolform; which in the B.
maculata, are beautifully marked at t h e b a l e , and as large as the u n d u l a l a ; the leaves iuverfely eggfliap'
d and more downy. The preient plant feldom grow* mo'€ than four feet high, flowers freely
about March, is very (west fcenied, a n d is eafily propagated by c u t t i n g s . It was firlt lent t o England
in t h e year 1/84, by Mr. Hlcnck from the I Hand of B a r b a d o s , to MelTr-. Lee and Kennedy, Hammerfniith.
Our drawing was made from a plant in the C l a p h am Collection, in March iSOO, It
