T H I S very handfome Antholyza, w h i c h is feen fo feldom t o flower, in this k i n g d o m , has been long an
i n h a b i t a n t of our garden-;. So long ago as 1 7 5 0 , it is find to have been cultivated by Miller; and
from the firm and hardy character of the root, wc lhould queflion its h a v i n g been fince that period,
ever, l i k e m a n y others of t h i s n a t u r a l order, loft t o us. The unfrequency of its flowering has, perh
a p s , occalioned the i n a t t e n t i o n , which is in general fliewn to its c u l t i v a t i o n ; though mod collectors
polfet's the b u l b s , few have feen their flowers. Our figure was taken in the month of J u l y , this year,
f r om a plant in t h e collection of T . Kvans, Efq. Stepney. It is i n c t e a f e d from the roofs, which
fliould be removed from the pots in J u l y , a n d replanted the end of October. We have not been able
t o procure any certain data on which to give directions to infure its flowering; hut the plant in
quell i o n , was p l a n t e d in a very l a i g e pot, t h e e a r t h was a compound of l i g h t peat one p a r t , (tiff* ' n am
o n e p a r t , and old rotten d u n g one part. It has been t h o u g h t by fome, that the Antholyza we have
figured in the Botanitl's Bepofitory, Plate X X X I . was the A. .rEthiopica of Linnaeus, &c; but, we
h a v e given it as a broad-lea*cd v a r i e t y ol the A ringens of t h a t a u t h o r , as w e have a d r a w i n g of t he
N a r r o w leaved V a n taken t r om a living p l a n t , to which, as well as to our prcfent figure, it much
aftines; and, we are led to t h i n k , n a t u r a l order would not be much violated, if wo had treated them
all as varieties of one fpecies.
