T H I S plant appears to Hand an i n t e r m e d i a t e c h a r a c t e r , b e t w e e n M a h e m i a and H e r m a n n i a : t h e general
habit afiines m o d to t h e former, and indeed, the lliape of the t h r e a d s , on w h i c h the elfcntial gener
i c a l diltiuctiou relis, approaches very near to thofe in M a h e r n i a ; for, although they h a v e not abfoh
i t i l y foot i t a l k s , they are m u c h larger, above t h e middle, than is ufual in H e r m a n n i a , as m a y be
f e e n o t i the p l a t e ; where thefe parts are fhewn, magnified. It has likewife t h a t lingular!)- curious
c h a r a c t e r , ieen in M a h e r n i a , of the two bloflfoms w h i c h terminate the nower-ftems, each t a k i n g a
c o n t r a r y direction, in i t , (piral twift, to t h e o t h e r . As a greenhoofe p l a n t , it is r a t h e r tender in r e g a rd
t o damp, t h o u g h not to c o l d ; therefore, lhould be k e p t in the moll airy part of the houfe. It is a
n a t i v e of the Cape, from w h e n c e it was i n t r o d u c e d in t h e year 1/90, to the Royal Gardens, Kew.
Ey c u t t i n g s m a d e in the m o n t h of A p r i l , it may be preferved, and increafed, as it is n o t a long-lived
p l a n t . Loam, with a Small portion of old r o t t e n dung, it thrives in moll. Our d r a w i n g was taken,
