STOCKHOLM TO ULEABORG. 355
LOCAL OBSERVATIONS.
Talvizie. Here is a room for travellers. As there were no young men
in the houfe, a young girl followed the fledge in the capacity o f driver.
This is a very common thing in Finland, th at girls attend th e travellers,
in order to take back th e horfes.
Tuokola. No lodging. T h ere are two houfes on th e left bank o f a
river, on which we travel as far as Gumfila, and which being open in
fome places threatened us with danger.
Gumfila. I perceived no place where a ftranger might be lodged. As
ou r journey was to continue on th e fame river which would pre-
fent the fame dangers, two guides offered themfelves to (hew us the
fafeft route.
Sillampe: good accommodation for paffengers. There lived a widow in
eafy circumftanoes, as it appeared, who was provided with every thing
necefiary for travellers. H e re is a fmall church.
Tooby. An apartment for ftrangers. T h e country is flat. Meadows o f
confiderable extent, which having been flooded, afforded a pleafant
patfage for our fledges over the ice.
Wafa is the capital of th e government o f the fame name. There is a
fea-port, a tribunal o f juflice, a prefident, and a governor.
