H ypnum dimorphum ; caule procumbente subpinnato vel fasciculate, fo liis ser-
rulatis basi binervibus, primariis cordato-acuminatis recurvis, rameis late
ovatis, obtusis vel acutis, dense imbricatis; theca ovata cernua, operculo co-
nico.
H. Stem procumbent, somewhat pinnate, or fasciculate, leaves serrulate,
(always.? ) 2-nerved at th e base, the primary ones cordate-acuminate,
re cu rv ed ; those o f the branches broadly ovate, obtuse or acute, densely
imbricated ; capsule ovate, cernuous, Ud conical.

Plant growing in lax, subprocumbent masses on th e ground. Stems 2-3
inches in length or more, branched in a somewhat fasciculated manner,
or irregularly pinnated with unequal ramuli. Leaves minutely serrulate,
(always?) shortly 2-nerved, varying in shape: those of the main
stem cordate-acuminate, more or less reflexed, towards th e summit of the
stem much longer and more recurved, giving the whole summit an incrassated
appearance : those of the ramuli much shorter, broadly ovate,
and either acute or obtuse, frequently the latte r : they are besides densely
imbricated, and never reflexed. The ramuli are usually attenuated.
Fruitstalk three-fourths o f an inch in length. Capsule ovate, cernuous.
