L . stems creeping, densely interwoven, branches erect, short, sericeous, filiform;
leaves subsecund, imbricated, erecto-patent, ovate-lanceolate,
acuminate, entire, obscurely 2-nerved a t the base ; fruitstalks numerous ;
capsules erect, oblong-ovate, the lid acutely conical.

also been found on trees at Darlington in Yorkshire, b y Mr Back-
Stems creeping, in rath e r wide, depressed, and densely interwoven patches,
of a deep and often yellowish-green colour, and conspicuous riot only
from the glossy or even silky character o f the foliage, but, from th e exceedingly
numerous capsules. The stems are two or th re e inches in
length, or more, closely appressed, and p re tty thickly set with short filiform,
suberect, nearly simple branches. Leaves imbricated, subsecund,
erecto-patent, ovato-lanceolate, acuminate, entire, shortly and faintly
2-nerved at the base : those of the perichcctium oblongo-lanceolate and
acuminate, with mostly a few unequal denticulations towards the apex,
2-nerved a t the base, more distinctly th an the cauline ones. Fruitstalk
h a lf to one inch in length. Capsule erect, oblong-ovate, reddish-brown,
the lid conical.
