GENERIC CHARACTER.
Cni.ita nulla. Perilhecium plerumque oblmgum, corneum, rima hngitudinali de-
hucens. Sporulæ in iuhulis hyalinis, ehngatis, erectis, gelatinosis.
Crust none. Penthecium mostly oblong, corneous, bursting by a longitudinal
slit. Sporules contained in hyaline, elongated, erect, gelatinous
tubes. ®

H. innate, scattered, elliptical, obtuse, rather tumid, smooth, naked, black
with a longitudinal depression.

H ad. On the dead leaves of Hederá helix, the common Ivy, in spring. In
the grounds of D r Buchanan H amilton at Leny.
On both surfaces of the leaf, scattered, not occurring on pale defined spots;
of different sizes, black, smooth, elliptical, rather acute at each extremity,
penetrating the substance of the leaf, tumid, and at length opening
with a m oderately wide fissure. Sporuliferous cells clavate. Sporules
globular. ^
The species of which the individual now figured is a variety,
I hope in a short period to be able to represent: in the
mean time, I have profited by recent specimens to exhibit one
state of this variable plant, which Well deserves illustration. I
have adopted the name given in the 2d volume of the admirable
Systema Mycologicum, which I have fortunately received
