tigation. This circumstance has, however, afforded me the satisfaction
of being the first to represent it in a British publication.
In the separation of the membranaceous from the fibrous
pai-t of the peridium, this species differs from most others of
the genus, which, indeed, is not a numerous one.
S c h r a d e r established the genus; and though P e r s o o n
subsequently reduced it to a section of Cribraria, also established
by the same admirable botanist, more recent observations
have restored both genera to their individual rights. It
is not a little in their favour that my learned friend N e e s v o n
E s e n b e c k has contributed to support them.
One species of Cribraria^ is figured by S o w e r b y in his
English Fungi, t. 400. f. 5. under the name of Spharocarpus
semitrichioides.
