SPECIFIC CRARACTER.
Grimmia unicolor ; caule elongato ; foliis anguste lanceolatis, obtusis, integris,
concavis; theca lævi, ovata, pallida, operculo conico-roslrato ; seta breviuscula,
Jlexuosa.
G. stem elongated ; leaves narrow-lanceolate, obtuse, entire, concave ; theca
smooth, ovate, pale, with a conical rostrate lid ; seta rather short, flexuose.

Plant growing in dense tufts, of a very dark green hue, the summits of the
branches only being rather paler, the whole, however, possessing a remarkable
glossiness. Stems half an inch to two inches in length, slender,
branched, and separating from each other when gathered, in the
manner of Trichostomum patens. Leaves brown below, blackish-green upwards,
narrow-lanceolate, towards their extremity becoming nearly linear,
very obtuse, w ith a nerve running to the apex ; erecto-patent when moist,
of a thickish rigid substance, and so singularly concave to the very apex,
as to give to the back a convex or semicylindrical appearance. Theca
ovate, inclined, smooth, mostly pale yellowish. L id reddish at the base,
conical, with a rather long oblique beak. Peristome of 16 lanceolate,
deep red, quite entire teeth. Calyptra very scariose at the base, split into
many segments, at length dimidiate. Seta 2-3 lines long, pale yellowish,
flexuose.
From the general habit of this moss, no one at all acquainted
with muscology would hesitate to consider it a Qrimmia.
Accordingly, it was so named by Dr H o o k e r ; but whilst I
