Helmisporium macrocarpon; simplices suhdatce, subacutce, nigerrimoe ;
sporidiis magnis, 5-8-septatis.
H. filaments simple, subulate, subacute, very b la ck ; sporidia large, marked
b y 6-8 divisions.
H ab. On th e bark o f a rotten branch o f some tree. Woods near Edinburgh.
Autumn.
Plant spreading widely, b u t in a lax manner, extremely black. Filaments
quite simple, above a line in length, subulate, rigid, polished, acute at
the apex, jointed towards the summit, where they are less opake. Sporidia
subdiaphanous, large for the size o f the plant, linear-oblong, obtuse,
clavate, attached to various parts o f the filaments, deciduous, divided
into 8-10 loculaments.
This is the largest of the genus, both in the length of its
filaments and the size of the sporidia. From the decayed state
of the branch on which I found it, I regret that it was impossible
to ascertain the species of tree which produced it.
