H ab. On the leaves o f Alnus glutinosa (the common Alder). F requent in
Summer and A utumn, I have also received this species from my friend
D r M ougeot, produced on the leaf o f a tree we are both unacquainted
with. I t was communicated to him from th e south of France.
Plant in irregular patches, or confluent, somewhat sunk into a hollowed
portion of the leaf, changing from w hitish to yellow, and at length deep
reddish-brown. Not unfrequently the second stage o f colour is a
whitish-pink. Peridia cylindrical, divided towards the summit into
2-5 short branches, studded with roundish lobes or processes.
This Erineum often covers the entire leaf. It is one of
the most irregular species we have, in its mode of growth, to
the naked ey e ; but under a microscope, is pre-eminently distinct,
and not inelegant.
