 Sunda-Islands  and Moluccas.  Stems  a t  length  40  feet  high, very  
 hollow.  The  short  branches  give  to  this  Bamboo  a  peculiar  habit.  
 One  variety has  splendidly yellow  stems. 
 Schizostachyum  elegantissimum,  Kurz. 
 Ja v a   ;  at  elevations  from  3,000  to  6,000  feet.  Unlike  all  other  
 Bamboos,  this  hears  flowers  at  an  age  of  three  years, and  is  therefore  
 of  special  importance for  seenio  effect.  Height 25  f e e t ;  stems stout.  
 I t   requires  renewal  after  flowering,  like many  allied  plants. 
 Schizostachyum  Hasskarlianum, Kurz. 
 Ja v a .  This  and  S.  serpentinum  afford  the  best  kinds  of  Bamboo-  
 vegetables  for  cookery  ;  the  young  shoots,  when bursting  out  of  the  
 ground,  being  used  for  the  purpose.  Kurz  mentions  as  eulmary  
 “ Rebong ’’-Bamboos  :  Gigantochloa  aspera,  G.  robusta,  G.  maxima,  
 G.  atter.  For ornamental culture  the  same meritorious writer singles  
 out  :  Schizostachyum  brachycladum,  the  varieties  of  Bambusa vulgaris, 
  with  gaudy  and  glossy  colouring of  the  stems,  in  contrast with  
 the  black-stemmed  species  of Phyllostachys  from  China  and  Japan.
