JERUSALEM.
I t has been imagined by some, that the present metropolis of
Palestine was the Salem, in which Melchisedek reigned ; but this
opinion rests on very slender foundations. The most ancient
name, under which it is known to us with certainty, is that of
Jebus, or Jebusi; when we read of it’s king being taken and
slain by Joshua, at the celebrated battle of Gibeon. It was then
allotted to the tribe of Benjamin ; but from the natural strength
of it’s situation, and the valour of the people, the jebusites continued
in possession of it till the time of David. At this period
it was of small extent, being confined to a single hill; but becoming
now the seat of government, and the capital of the whole
kingdom, it was soon considerably enlarged, the erection of the
temple by Solomon contributing to this in no small degree. At
different times, as buildings accumulated without it’s precincts,
