M. Temminck says this bird is never seen in Holland, but
has been taken in Germany. M. Vieillotldoes not include it
in Jns~ Birds pf France,- White of Selborne says'that a thóst
accurate observer of nature assured him th&Tfre had found St-
on the banks of the streams in Andalusia. I t is seen óm its
passage at Genoa and Italy in spring, and M. Temminck says
that it breeds in Sardinia. Specimens have been brought to
this country from South Africa both by Captain Spiller and
Dr. Andrevsr Smith; and again quoting Whit^^flSelborne,
“ Ilasselquist says that it migrates to Egypt in the autumn.”
The Zoological Society have received specimens from T&ebi-
zond, presented by Keith Abbott, Esq.; and Messrs-. Dickson
and Ross ; and'the Russian naturalists, M. Menetriesand
HoheBaeker, found this bird .akö on the margins of lakes: ^between
th.efBlack and th e Caspian Seas. Colonel ^ykes^and
Major Franklin brought specimens from different parts of
India'; M. Temminck says -it-is .found in Japan, and Dr.
Hprsfield includes it in his, Birds Java,
The beak is black; the"irides ^he, ,whole of the;head,

The whole length about thirteen inches. From the carpal
joint to the end of the wing eight inches.; the fi-rsKquilbfea-
ther the longest.
Females have the black eolour on the backless pure, and
not tinged with green ; the dark streaks about then.OGQ.iput
are more .numerous.
Ypung birds have the feathers of the back and yrings
brown, edged, with white, and more dark feathers about the
back of the head; the legs orange.
