The whole length measurement assigned by M. Temmiijck,
in his Manual for Totani^s hypoleucos, is sevenidnches three
lines, French; that, for Tot anus mucularius eight rinoK.c|a
French ; surely this last must be* a misprint. I have\never
seen a specimen,- of T . macularius that approached to eight
inches, .and all authors agree that T. hypoleucos is the darger.

The - young: chicks on leaving the shell are ^©Vered with
down of a dull drab;.colour,: marked with a single*.stjeafoof-
black down the middle of the back, and with another behind
the ear.
M. Temminck, in the fourth Part of his Manual, page
418, says, “ the youngipf the year of 'this, specinsjirfheasily,

This Spotted Sandpiper, Totanus maculariys, of Temminck,
must' not be confounded with the ^Totanus mac%tl,atus
of Bechstein, which is ' only another ^ s |em atic name for our
Spotted Redshank, figured at pag®*5
