Habit. In Cochinchinä, Borneo, Sumatra, aliisque, u t probabile, Archipelagi Indici insulis, ubi ea telluris est natura, quam
in exordio hujus Capitis indicavimus, quandoquidem et alise plerseque Pin i solum graniticum amant. Lignum in
yetustioribus arboribus resinse ditissimum, oleo pinguissimo quasi imbutum, odoris tcrcbinthiaci, indigenis inöpiä
olei lucem praebet, in lamellas circiter dimidium pollicis crassas fissum. Resina terebinthinse vulgari nostra simillima,
pcllucida, ad complures usus ceconomicos et medicos ejus vice adhibcri potest; in inferiore parte arborum vctustiorum
copio'sa, in junioribus tantum non plane deest, quae propterea luminibus su&t inutiles.
Descr. Arbor socialis, procera; trunco gracili, 60-80 ped., imä circiter 2 ped. diametro, cortice crasso
cinereo-fusco rimoso, superne in coronam pyramidalem setale magis irregulärem expanso. Ramuli
ascendentes, aliquantum tortuosi, cinereo-fusci, glabri, inferne perularum basibus persisjentibus
tuberculati, superne foliati, foliorum fasciculis conniventibus, haud raro subseeundis, nempe a latere
ramis obverso aversis. Gemmae solitaries v. plures in apice ramulorum, elongato-ovoidese, composites
ex perulis plurimis subulatis membranaceis, primo arete imbricatis apieeque revolutis, deinde a se
invicem remotis aridis fuscis basi induratis gemmas secundarias foliiferas v. florigeras in axillis foven-
tibus, deciduis. Gemmae foliiferce illee elongato-lineares, subincurvee, iterum perulatee; perulis
membranaceo-aridis, truncatis, margine sphacelato-fimbriatis, fuscis, in tubum cylindricum circiter
8 lin. longum foliorum fasciculum cingentem congestis. Folia in quovis fasciculo gemina, arrecta,
acerosa, subacuta, 3-8 poll, longa, tenuia, rectiuscula, supra concava et ad margines tenuissime
crenulato-scabrida, ceterum glabra, dorso convexa, utrinque seriebus stömatum pluribus striolata.
Amenta mascula plurima, in axillis perularum sessilia, approximata, 8 - 9 lin., cylindrica, recta v.
curvata, basi perulis imbricatis lanceolatis acuminatissimis margine dilacerato-fimbriatis scariosis
fuscis involucrata. Stamina primo dense imbricata, deinde laxa. Filamenta brevia, filiformia, supra
loculos binos extrorsum adnatos appositos ellipsoideos rimä longitudinali bivalves dilatata in connectivi
processum lato-ovatum v. suborbicularem incurvatum membranaceum margine obsolete crenulatum.
Strobilus anno secundo maturescens, in ramulo abbreviato recurvo erecto-patens, 2 | poll, longus,
ovoideo-conicus; squamae carpellares lignoses, oblonges, subtrigones, extus convexes, intus imprimis
ad basin recipiendis seminibus concaviusculee, apice in discum subrhombeum radiato-striatum
nitidum medio in umbonem depressum tandem recurvum elevatum incrassatæ. Semina in quàvis
earum squamarum carpellarium bina, parva, ovoidea, alâ cultriformi membranaceâ pellucidâ flavà
ipsis triplo longiore aucta. Embryon in axe albuminis inversum, clavatum, cotyledonibus plerumque'
sex brevissimis obtusis.
