TO
WILLIAM RITCHIE, E sq.
ONE OF THE MASTERS OF THE HIGH-SCHOOL, EDINBURGH.
D ear Sir ,
A s I had the pleasure and advantage o f your company
during a considerable part of the Journey described in
the following work, I have taken the liberty o f addressing
it to you, as to the person best qualified to appreciate
the accuracy o f the details, and to decide how far I have
availed myself of the opportunities o f information which
occurred to us during our to'nr through Sweden. I had
another motive for prefixing your name to this work:
I wished to erect a kind o f public monument o f the
friendship which has existed so long between us, and
which has been attended with so much gratification and
advantage to,
D ear Sir ,
Your’s faithfully,
THE AUTHOR.
