the professors likewise dined at these houses; not indeed at the same
table with the students, but in a room by themselves. The time when
the professors begin their lectures is the first of October, and the session
lasts about eight .months.
The common degrees granted by the University .of Upsala are Philosophic
CaruMatus, or Bachelor o f Arts; and Philosophies Magister,
or, Master of Arts. The degrees in divinity,, law, and medicine are
three, and are styled Theologies, &c. Candidatus, Licenciatus, Doctor.
When the students take their master's degree they appear in a black
silk cloak. On days of ceremony the professors are clad in black
cloaks. On the same occasions the doctors in divinity are distinguished
by a black silk hat, the doctors o f law by a white silk hat, and the
doctors o f medicine by a hat of green or sky-blue silk.
The teachers at.Upsala may be divided into four distinct classes;
namely, professors, assistants, magistri docentes or privileged teachers,
and a set o f persons who teach horsemanship, dancing, painting,
music, and certain modern languages. The best way of conveying a
clear idea to the reader of the different branches taught at the :Univer-
sity of Upsala will be to give a list of the different teachers as they
existed when I was in that city in 18 12 , divided according to their different
ranks and departments: •
