Var. /S. la tifo lia ; foliorum segmentis brevioribus latioribus.

and all parts of th e Southern Islands ; also found on th e mountains. Ba n k s and Solander, Forster, B id wiU,
Colenso, L y a ll, etc, N a t. name, “ K u ri K u ri,” Middle Islan d , L ya ll.
One of the most remarkable plants of its large Natural Order and of New Zealand, very aromatic, perfectly
glabrous everywhere, but tuberculated miuutely at the cartilaginous edges of tbe leaves and ribs of tbe stem, etc.
Boot as thick as tbe wi-ist. Stem thicker than tbe thumb, deeply channelled, gTamdated on tbe surface. Radical
leaves numerous, spreading. Sheaths 1 -3 inches long, 1 - l J broad, witb erect spinescent aui'ioulæ at the top.
Leaves 8 inches to S feet long, pinnate, witb the pinnæ very long and spreading ; raobis or common petiole compressed,
distinctly jointed on to the sheath and at every pah of pinnæ, which are opposite, grass-like in appearance,
but uot in texture, 1 -2 feet long, 2 -6 hnes broad, acuminate, pungent ; midrib very strong, tuberculate ; margins
cartilaginous, crenulate-dentate. Blm-al leaves witb rigid glossy channelled sheaths 1 inch long, aud three to five
long subulate lobes, of which tbe lateral often project horizontally, and the middle one (which is much the longest,
2 -4 inches) points downwards ; altogether these leaves form a compact chevawx-de-frise around the flowers. Male
umheh compound, spreading: female smaller, shorter, less compound, nestling amongst the sheaths. Carpels
i iuch long.—Very variable in tbe breadth of the leaf-lobes. The whole plant assumes, when dry. a rich bright
yellow coloiu. Mr. Bidwill and 5L-. Colenso both regard the variety with broad pinnæ as distinct, but the former
botanist never finds it in flower, and I perceive no difference in the ilowers and fruit of Mr. Colenso’s. \ ar. /3 may
be the first year’s broad leaves of a biennial or perennial plant. Mr. Bidwill says th a t this plant often grows 9 feet
high, and so densely as to render tracts of country impassable to all but pigs, who grub up the roots for food ; he
adds, that it exudes an aromatic gum-resin in great abundance, that eveiy part tastes like all the garden JJmhel-
liferce, and that it might he cultivated to advantage. I t is closely allied to the following genus, and, hke it, is
usually dicecious, h u t hermaphrodite fiowers often occm-, especially in the male umbels.

A remarkable genus of perfectly smooth, herbaceous, very aromatic, herbaceous or half-shrubby plants, often
attaining a great size, first described in the ‘ Flora Antarctica ’ from two Auckland Island species, which are much
larger than any hitherto found in New Zealand. Oalyx margin of five unequal teeth. Petah with an iuflexed
point. Stamens long, incurved. Stylopodia of mole flowers broad and flat ; of the female conical, terminaling in
long erect styles. Fruit oblong, broad or narrow. Carpels dorsally compressed, unequal, rarely equal, one often
empty, all with winged ribs, five in the perfect carpels (two lateral and three dorsal), as many or fewer in the other
carpel, where two or more are reduced to mere lines. TJrnheh compound.—This genus is, as far as at present known,
confined to New Zealand and the islands south of it. (Name from avmcs, unequal, and Tepva, io cut ; from the
unequal carpels of the fruit.)
§ a. Frect, herbaceous. Leaves radical, compound.

Of this fine plant I have only one specimen, past flower; in many respects it much resembles A . aniipoda, Fl.
Antarct., but is not a yard high, and has much less compound leaves. Stem as thick as the middle finger, branched
above into numerous, many-flowered, compound umbels, 2 -4 inches across. Leaves 1 -2 feet long, erect, recurved,
bi-tri-pinuate. Petiole with a broad sheath below, jointed throughout its length, and deeply grooved in the dried
specimens. Primary pinnce 1 -4 inches loug, coriaceous, smooth, their partial petiole also jointed; secondary
oblong, deeply cut into liuear, bluiit, narrow lobes.
2. Anisotome intermedia. Hook. il l.; caule erecto superne florifero, foliis radicabbus longe petiolatis
(petiolo articulato basi vagiuato) oblongis bipiimatis, pinnis primariis la te ovatis secundariis sessilibus ob-
ovato-cuneatis inciso-lobatis dentatisque segmentis subacutis, involucri universalis e t partialis foliolis linearibus
acutis pedunculis brevioribus, fru ctib u s breve pedicellatis lineari-oblongis, stylis elongatis, carpellis
fertilibus unico 5- altero 4-alato, semine profunde sulcato.

A much smaller plant than the former, 8-1 0 inches liigh, but similar in aU other respects, except in the less
divided leaves and less cut pinnules. Leaves 5-8 inches long,.including the long jointed petiole, recurved, l i inch
broad across the pinnaa, which are in four to eight pair, broadly ovate in outline, with a jointed secondary petiole ;
pinnules obovate or cuneate, i inch long, sessile, deeply cut and lobed. Fruiting stem as thick as a crow-quill,
several times divided, with a broad sheathing leaf at the fork, which bears a small, much reduced lamina. Umheh
l i inch across. Involucral leaves linear, shorter than the primary branches, wliich are i inch long. Fruit narrow,
1 inch long, crowned with the long diverging styles. Carpeh both fertile; one five-, the other four-winged; both
having as many stout vittm in the pericarp, and strong grooves iu the seed, as there are spaces between the wings.
—This is intermediate between A . Lyallii and A. aromatica.
§ b. Frect, Jierhaoeons. Leaves all radicai, pinnate.

A very strong-scented, tall, stout herb, with one or many branching stems, and many radical leaves, given oif
from a thick fleshy divided root. Leaves 4 -1 0 inches long, pinnate; petiole longer than the leaf, which latter is
linear-oblong. Pinna: six to ten pair, often imbricating, 1 -2 inches long, sessile, broadly ovate, blunt, obhquely
cordate or truncate at the base, serrate witli small teeth, without any nerves, but covered with reticulated veins.
Stems longer than the leaves, deeply striate, branching above, witb broadly sheathing short leaves at the fork. In volucre
