dense-flowered, 8-12 lines long. 4 (becoming 8) broad, the upper fourth male. Scales pale, uniform, lanceolate
acute, deciduous, the lowest shortly cuspidate. Peiigynium 21 lines long, f broad, spindle-shaped, triquetrous.
Achenium. 1 J line long, i broad, subplano-convex ; mouth contracted, variable in size, some of Mr. Colenso’s Euahine
mountain specimens being especially so.— Allied to U. compacta. Brown, but tlie spikes are jiale, more dense and
with more numerous and crowded flowers; the perigynia are nan-ower, and become spreading, and the leaves are
longer and laxer.

Colcnso’s specimens arc in flower; Dr. Lyall’s arc nearly all past fruit.

Spike 2 i- 3 inches long, 2^ lines broad. Scales uniform ; males closely imbricated, females numerous, loosely
imbricated. Perigynia lanceolate, as long as or shorter than the lanceolate scale, which is blunt or sharp. In var. B
the perigynia are sliorter in proportion to the scale, and the bractea foliaceous-. in var. 7 the spike is slender and
leaves narrow, and the perigynium is longer than its scale.
