WH E T H E R the unexplored part o f the Southern
Hemifphere be only an immenfe mafs of water,
or contain another continent, as fpeculative geography
feemed to fuggeft, was a queftion which had long engaged
the attention, not only of learned men, but o f mod of the
maritime powers of Europe.
T o put an end to all diverfity o f opinion about a matter
fo curious and important, was his Majefty’s principal
motive, in directing this voyage to be undertaken, the
hiftory of which is now fubmitted to the Public.
But, in order to give the Reader a clear idea of what has
been done in it, and to enable him to judge more accurately,
how far the great object that was propofed, has
been obtained, it will be neceffary to prefix a fliort account
of the feveral voyages which have been made on difcoveries
to the Southern Hemifphere, prior to that which
