A COUNTRY INN.
T h e scene of this plate is an inn at Ajaz, in Piedmont, near which a man and woman, in the
dress of the country, are conversing. The man is dressed in a waistcoat and breeches, a sash
round his middle, and a jacket thrown over his shoulders like a cloak. At the door of the inn
are a peasant and his son, mounted on an ass, who have called on their way from market for a
pot of wine.
The houses here are commonly built of the stones collected from old ruins: their tables are a
square piece of wood, supported by stones; and their chairs, or rather stools, a round piece of
wood, with a stick in the middle.
