Caidis erectus, superne ramosus, 2-3 pedalis, albidus, nitidus, glaberrimus, ramis longis patentibus. Folia
sessilia, lineari-sublanceolata, acuta, integerrima vel suhremote denticulata, supra glabra subtus pubescentia,
caulina 2-3 poll, longa. Flores axillares sessiles. Calycis tubus apice dilatatus lacinias puberulas paullo
superans. Petala alba, rotundata, integra (?) calycis laciniis breviora. Stamina sequalia. Anthercb lineares.
Capsula obtuse tetragono-cylindrica, truncata, subglabra.

Syst. Veget.,) which belongs to another section, and has, according to the description, no resemblance at all
with the CE. albicaulis, Nutt.

opposita ceteris breviora. Antherce oblongae, adnatae. Stigma quadrilobum, luteum, lobis ovatis. Capsula
cylindrica, albido-sericea, truncata.

axillis sessiles. Calycis tubus infundibuliformis, laciniis sequalis. Petala lilacina, (7-8 lineas longa,) cune-
ato-rotundata, integra, margine superiore denticulata, calycis tubum lacinias et genitalia duplo superantia.
Stamina insequalia, quatuor petalis opposita ceteris breviora. Filamenta plana linearia: antherce lanceolatse
apice curvatse. Pistillum stamina longiora sublongior. Stigmatis lacinice intense purpurese, patentes, ob-
longse. Capsula cylindrica, apice attenuata, truncata, 8-sulcata, glauco-pubescens.
Hab. Near the River Aguilar, in North California, lat. 43°, north, in dry Prairies. Douglas.

Caulis pedalis bipedalisque adscendens, diffusus, ramosus, glaber, ramis numerosis, flexilibus, patentibus,
junioribus puberulis. Folia lineari-lanceolata, basi attenuata, integerrima, glabra. Flores in axillis foliorum
superiorum sessiles. Calycis tubus infundibuliformis, laciniis triplo brevior. Petala lilacina macula purpurea
notata, ungue flavo, (7—8 lineas longa,) late obovata, integra, margine superiore denticulata, calycis
lacinias tertia parte, genitalia duplo magis, superantia. Stamina inaequalia, quatuor petalis opposita ceteris
breviora. Filamenta plana linearia: antheris lanceolatis apice curvatis. Stigma quadrifidum luteum,
laciniis ellipticis. Capsula cylindrica, elongata, utrinque attenuata, puberula.—Obs. Descriptio caulis e
plantis cultis desumta est, in speciminibus spontaniis caulis videtur erectus strictus. In icone operis landati
Bot. Mag., genitalia sunt duplo longiora, quam in speciminibus spontaniis et cultis. Miro errore in eodem
libro descriptione hujus et prsecedentis speciei character Epilobii generis (“ semina comosa,” etc.) pro (Eno-
therce charactere insertus est.

pubescentia, inferiora late ovata, obtusa, in petiolum brevissimum attenuata, superiora sessilia, lanceolata aut
ovato-lanceolata, acuta. Calycis tubus infundibuliformis laciniis duplo brevior. Petala lilacina (3-4 lineas
longa) obcordata, margine crenulata, calycis laciniis duplo, genitalia longiora duplo magis, superantia. Stamina
insequalia: antherce oblongae apice curvatae. Stylus stamina longiora aequans. Stigma crassum pur-
pureum, laciniis reflexis appressis. Capsula obscure-tetragona, a basi crassiore ad apicem usque attenuata,
villosa.—Ab omnibus speciebus affinibus stigmatis forma differt.
