MR. COLBURN'S LIST OF
BURKE^S EXTINCT, DORMANT, & SUSPENDED
PEERAGES ;
A COMPANION TO ALL OTHER PEERAGES.
B e a u t i f u l l y printed in double columns, price I8s. bound.
This work, formed on a plan precisely sinailar to that of Mr. Burke's very popular Dictionary
of the present Peerage and Baronetage, comprises those Peerages which have been suspended or
extingiushed since the Conquest, particularizing the members of each family in each generation,
and bringing the lineage, in all possible cases, through either collaterals or females, down to
existing houses. It connects, in many instances, the newwith the old nobility, and it will in all
cases shew the cause which has influenced the revival of an extinct dignity in a new creation.
It should be particiUorly noticed, that this new work appertains nearly as much to extant as to
extinct persons of distinction j for though dignities pass away, it rarely occurs that whole
families do.

" This important work has long been an esteemed chronicle of the triumphant exploits of the
British Navy, but its value is much further enhanced in this edition by the history being continued
to the present time by the gallant author, who, in addition to his long experience of fifty
years' service, has also been facilitated in the progress of his work by the assistance of most of
the eminent men whose actions he narrates."—

" Tlie author of these volumes is so weU known for her " Memoirs of Henry VIII. ' 'and " Life of
Sir Walter Raleigh," that the readers of her new work will at once perceive m it the grace Md
vigour of style which so distinguish her former efforts. The poUtical mtrigues which so mstracted
the Court of Queen Anne are all very ably set forth. Circumstances have caUed pubbc
attention to these matters j so that we consider Mrs. Thomson's pubhcation as pecuharlyw^
timed. But even had there been no such mtroduction to our notice, the delightful ma.nner m
which she narrates the varied incidents of the Life of one of the most illustrious ladies who
have become celebrated m our history, the anxiety to place the character of the Duchess of
Marlborough in a right light before our readers, would recommend the work to general acceptance.
It supplies a portion of history which was much wanted, and we are bound to say that
Mrs. Tliomson has executed her task with dUigence, fidelity, and grace."—ilg-e.

DIARY OF THE TIMES OF GEORGE IV.
V O L S . T H E THIRD AND FOURTH.
( C o m p l e t i n g the work.)
COMPRISING MANY NEW AND INTERESTING LETTERS OF QUEEN CAROLINE,
THE PRINCESS CHARLOTTE, AND OTHER ROYAL OR DISTINGUISHED PERSONS.
Subscribers to the first two vols, of tliis work arc advised to give early orders for
t h e concluding volumes, to prevent disappointment.
" The immense success of the first two volumes of this extraordinaiy work naturally led to an
expectation of further volumes, and we have now before us the two which conclude the undertaking.
Ttie work is evidently authentic, and the public have more to do with its contents than
with the propriety or impropriety of Lady 's publishing them to the world. Certain it is that
none of the statements contained in the first two volumes have been successfully contradicted,
and Lord Brougham's criticisms in the Edinburgh Review have only increased public desire for a
continuation of the book. In these volumes, the most interesting parts axe the private letters of
the Princess of Wales, and her daughter, the Princess Charlotte. The work is exceedmgly
amusing, and it affords an admirable uisight into high life. We refer our readers to the volumes,
which, in many parts, are of a by far more serious nature than persons in general may imagme.
Whatever may have been her Ladyship's motives for writing this singular work, its production is
unquestionably beneficial to the public."—Dts/znic/i.
