In a specimen, kept over two summers, at the Gardens |§f
the Zoological Society in the Regént’s Park, the moulting
of the ruff commenced on the head and neck, about ’the
29th of March, 1832 ; the feathers on the body were; not
thrown off; the head and neck were left destitute of plumage,
but the feathers of - the . body remained “in' a'iperfect
state. The new ruff and head feathers' appeared almost
immediately, and were perfected by the 4th of May. „ This
bird began to shed his ruff feathers on the - 8th of June,
and by the 6th of July he had Jest them all.
A female, killed at the end of April, from which the representation
Was taken, had;the beak one inch and a qbarter
in length, dark brown at the point,’ but lighter in^c’&lour at
the base; irides dusky1 brown; headland -neck-ash-brown,
the centre of e'ach of the small featMäs’^darker | than -the
margin, producing a spotted appearance; - feeapulars, -back,
wing-coverts,1 and tertials,- ifeärly -black, with broad ash-
brown margins; somef%fi ;the great"wing-cóvertsy’and
tertials barred tran§yej|gTy. with pale reddish-brown ;-! primaries
dull black, with'1 white | -shafts; secondaries-' ;e%ed
with pale brownish-white; rump, and upper tófl-b'öyerts,
brown ; tail-feathers ash-brown, barred transvë¥sëly®vltl> pale
reddish-brown and black; chin greyifl^whitè; feathers U)f
the front of the neck, thé' breast,1 ahd sides, black in the
centre; with broad greyish-y|ti|^ margins;- belly, vep-t^and
under tail-coverts; white; - legs ^and »toe's7 pale -yellowish-
brown ; claws black.
The whole -length of a female ten - in t is ' - and a half.
The wing, from the’ carpal jbint^bq- the end of the !qu! 11 -
