shot at a lake near the town of Dumfries, and sent to him
by "William Dalmahoy.- The .statement by Don in h k account
of Forfarshire (1812), th a t it had been seen in such unlikely
localities as the mountains of ;Clova, and on Ben Lawer's in
August, 1798, may be open to' d o u b t; but it.occurred near
Glasgow in 1850; and again in 1867, in which year-it-is also
said to have been seen near Aberdeen, and . 8 ir W illia m
Jardine recorded an example shot that Qctphe^in Dumfriesshire^
Baikie and Heddle mantjob twp examples in
Orkney in 1841, and Saxby says th a t one was. observed in
Shetland prior to 1048.
