Professor E llio tt Coues procured specimens a t Pembina, in Dakota, in Ju n e , and
observes th a t tbo species is one of those of general distribution along tb e line in summer,
breeding in colonies anywhere ivhere tb e cut banks of th e rivers alford suitable sites for
tbe digging of th e holes in which th e nests a re constructed. I n South-eastern Dakota it
is common, according to Air. Agersborg, and breeds.
Mr. Belding summarizes th e records from California as follows:—“ San Bernardino,
ra re m ig ra n t th ro u g h th e valley {Stephens) ; Santa Cruz, common summer resident
{J .S k irm )-, n o t uncommon tliro u g b o u t California ; abundant a t Sacramento
city {Reermann) ; Contra Costa and Alameda counties, rare summer resident {Bryant) ;
Nicasio, Alarch {Allen)-, Malbem Dike, breeding in large numbers on one of th e islands
{Rensluno); Truckee R eservation in Alay {Ridgway).” Dr. H a r t A lerriam says th a t, during
th e Deatli-Valley Expedition, “ B ank-Swallows Averc seen in tAvo places only by members
of th e expedition. Air. Nelson saAv a few in company w'itb rough-winged Swallows a t
tbe bend of tb e Colorado, in Nevada, about Alarch 10. Air. Stevens found it common
a t Alvord, in Owens VaUey, where th ey were breeding in tb e banks along the sloughs,
J u n e 26-28.”
Tbe species does n o t appear in Air. F ra n k Chapman’s list, and no specimen Avas
obtained by Air. J . K. Lord in British Columbia; b u t Air. John F an n in states th at
i t is a summer resident east of tb e Cascades, b u t is rare to tb e west of th a t range.
I t is recorded by Air. Lawrence from Gray’s Harbour, in AVashington County, and in
California it is found in suitable places.
Air. ToAvnsend did n o t find i t iu any of th e localities in Northern California visited by
him, b u t in V en tu ra County, according to Air. Evermann, i t is a summer resident,
locally abundant.
R e tu rn in g to the n o rth ern b abihit of the Sand-AIartin, Air. Bishop says th at i t aatis
tolerably common on tbe Alagdalen Islands, breeding on Grindstone. According to
Air. Dwight i t is a summer resident on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia; and
Alessrs. Britta in and Cox record i t from th e Restigoucbe A^'alley, in New Brunswick;
they also saw' a small colony a t tb e mouth of th e KedgAvick River. I n New England
Air. Alaynard says th a t i t is th e last of tb e Sw-allows to appear, a rriving about tbe
middle of Alay. Air. Stearns, in bis work on ‘New England Bird L ife,’ observes:—
“ These v ery iJa in ly coloured Swallows, th e least iu size of all our species, arc abundant
summer residents, wherever the requirements of th e ir breeding in stin c t arc fulfilled.
Unlike a ll tb e rest, tbe Bank-SAvallows have never yielded to modernizing inllueucos,
and still persist in excavating holes for themselves iu tb e ground, as they have always
done.” I n Berkshire County, Alassacbusetts, Air. Faxon says i t is plentiful, breeding in
tb e banks of th e Housatonic river. Air. AV. BrCAvster also states th a t th e Sand-AIartin
is a common bird near AV'incbcuden, in Alassacbusetts, and breeds th e r e ; an d Alessrs.
Faxon and Allen remark th a t it is common in tb e AVliitc Alountain region, in New
Hampshire, from Ju n e to August. I t also breeds very frequently in th e d istrict of
Columbia, according to Air. Richmond.
Air. Dutcber, in his paper on th e birds of L ittle Gull Island, New York, obserA'Cs;—
“ Although no birds of tbis species Avere seen. Air. C. B. Field said tb jit they had brod
abundantly on Great Gull Island earlier in tb e season, a statement th a t anus Avell
verified by tbe large number of boles in th e sand-banks th a t overlooked tbe shores of
the island. Air. Field also said th a t about as soon tb e Swallows bad dug o u t th eir
homes, some folks, who should have been b e tte r employed, came over from Connecticut
and amused themselves by digging o u t tb e lioles th a t tb e Sw'allows bad made, th u s
compelling tbe birds to excavate noAV ones.”
