3. L’Hirondelle de S. Dorniiigue (p. 493).—From the Island of Dominica, whence sent to Reaumur
by a M. Chervain. On this description and on D’Aubcnton’s figure the name of Hirundo
dominicensis was founded by Gmelin.
4. L’Hirondclle de Cayenne (p. 495).—Described and figured (pi. xlvi. fig. 1) from a specimen
sent to Reaumur by M. Vcrron from Cayenne. lYom this description and D’Aubenton’s
figure is derived Gmclin’s name of Hirundo chalybea.
5. L ’Hirondelle du Sénégal (p. 490, pl. xiv. fig. 1).—Described and figured fi-om a specimen sent
to Reaumur by M. Adanson. Evidently the Great Mosque-Swallow of Senegal, aud it is on
this description that Linnæus founded his Hirundo senegalensis.
C. L’Hirondelle du Pérou (p. 498), and
7. La Grande Hirondelle du Pérou (p. 498).
These two species arc derived from Feuillée (Journ. Obs. Phys. p 33 [1725]) and were not
known to Brisson. Wc cannot identify the first for certain, but the second seems to be
Atticora cinerea.
8, L’Hirondelle de la Martinique (p. 499, pl. xlv. fig. 2).—The figure represents a small Spine-tailed
Swift, sent to Reaumur by M. Thibault de Cbanvalon from the Island of Martiniijue. I t is
probably the same bird figured by D’Aubenton under the same name.
1). L’Hirondelle de la Caroline (p. 501).—This description of a Spine-tailed Swift is founded on
that of Catesby (App. p. 8, pi. 8). Linnæus named it Hirundo pelagica in his 10th edition
[cf. Hartert, Cat. B. xvi. p. 480), and it is the Hirundo pelasgia of his 12th edition (p. 345).
He also adds :—
Conf. Hirundo martiuicana, Briss. Av. ii. p. 499, t. 45. f. 2.
The latter bird, which, it must be remembered, was described by Brisson from an actual speci-
men, is not mentioned by Mr. Hartert iu the above-quoted volume, and we are unable to
identify it further.
10. L’Hiroudelle d’Amérique (p. 502, pi. xlv. fig. 3).—The figure is unrecognizable, but the
description is taken from a Cayenne specimen sent to Reaumur by M. Ai-tnr. It is the
“ Tapera ” of the Brazilians, as quoted by Sloaue, Mavcgrave, and others of the old authors, and
is the Hirundo tapera of Linnæus (p. 345).

i. p. 1021.]—Dr. Sclatcr has pointed out that this cannot be a Swift, as Brisson, the most conscientious
of describcrs, expressly states that his specimen had twelve tail-feathers. I t is
therefore impossible to define what the species really is. {Cf. Filiseli & Ilartlaub, Vog.
Ostafr. p. 132; and Hartert, Cat. B. xvi. p. 463.)

The history of this work is given hy Boddacrt in 1783. The designer of the plan of issuing this
