The definition of the genus Hirundo by Schaeffer, with the Chimncy-Swallow as the type, has
fortunately preserved the name of Hirundo instead of Chelidon for this large assemblage of Swallows.
Thus Chelidon of Forster becomes a synonym of Hh-undo, Schaeffer .(ex Linn.). Hirundo of Forster =
Chelidon, Boic {posteh, p. xlvi). With regard to Clivicola, this genus is now being generally adopted
over Cotile of Boic, but Forster, iu the same work (p. 17), calls the Sand-Martin Riparia europcea. If
a mere name is sufficient uow-a-days to establish a genus, then, it seems to us, Riparia must take
precedence of Clivicola and the name of tlie Sand-Martin become Riparia riparia.

The genus “ Ilirondelle” is treated of on pages 501-537. Many names are here given which arc
in general use a t the present day, but in some instances they are founded on the species of Levaillaut’s
‘ Oiseaux d’Afrique,’ ju st as were those of Stephens. The names given by the latter naturalist have
always been made to give way to those of Vieillot ; but, although they were published in the same year,
it seems to us that, in all probability, tbe volume of Stephens’s '' General Zoology’ was issued before
the fourteenth volume of the ‘ Dictionnaire.’

discovered.
