Var. A. Taken from D’Auljenton’s ‘ Planclies Enluminées’ {pi. 54G. fig. 1). Not identified,
and probably not a Swallow a t all.
Esculent Swallow. [^Hirundo esculenta, L.]
Wheat Swallow.—Founded on “ L ’Hirondelle brune h ventre tacheté, ou L’Hirondelle des Blés ”
of Mo n ftcilk rd (II. N. Oiseaux, vi. p. 09-/,). D ’A u b e nW s figure (pl. 544. % . 2) is hcée
quoted as a " variety,” iu ivliich identification Latliam again follows llontbeillard.
Grey-mmped Swaliow.-Tliis is founded on Montbeiliard's "P e tite Ilinn.tlclle il croupion gris,"
wbicli was lironglit from tlio Isle of Franco by M. Commcrson. Montbcillard describes the
hird as black above, witli the rump whitish, and the entire under surface whitish. Latham
quotes again fig. 2 of D’Aubenton’s plato 5-41-, forgetting, appareiitlv, that on the previous
page he had referred this figure to l.is "W h e a t Swaliow." His description, however, is un-
doubtedly that of the “ Hirondelle dc I’islc de Bourbon ” o fD ’Aubenton (PI. Enl 544 fig 2)
The quotation of “ fig. 2,” in which he is followed by Gmelin, is quite wrong; but the
description of the “ Grey-ruraped Swallow ” is certainly CoUocalia francica (Gm.) and is so
identified by Mr. H a rtert (Cat. B. xvi. p. 5Ü3).
Enfons-rumped Swailow.-Foniided on Montbeiliard's “ Hirondelle k croupion roux et queue
carree. This may be Petrochelidon pyrrhonota, but the description is not accurate,
is noteworthy th a t Latham seems to have appreciated the differences between SwaUows and
as all^the rcmam.ng spccios, nos. 32-3?, are placed a t the end of the Swallows, and are even
of «> " Swifts.” He did not, however, demonstrate tlie true distinctions between them.

The genus Hirundo (pp. 1015-1020) contains in this work 44 species, an advance of 32 on tlie
number known to Liniiams. As in the case of the twelfth edition of tho ■ Systema,’ many of the species
are Swifts. ri , e
The following are the species known to Gmelin, and, as usual, the names given for the first time
are simply the latinisation of the English titles given by Latham. This brings up to date tlic iminher
of species of Swallows knowu to the older autliors.
1. Hirundo rustica, L. /9. Hirundo alba, ex Brisson, ii. p. 489.
2. Hirundo tahitica, p. 1016.—Founded on Latham’s “ Otahcite Swallow.”
3. Hirundo esca/cn/a.—Founded on Latham’s “ Esculent Swallow,” which is again taken from
Brisson (Orn. ii. p. 510, pi. 46. fig. 2).
4. Hirundo ôorionica.—Founded on the “ Wheat Swallow ” of Latham, which is derived from Montbeillard
{suprà, p. xxxviii), and including the Hirondelle de I’lslc de Bourbon (‘ Planches
Eulumiuées.’ pl. 544. fig. 2), Avhich is also Hirundo borbonica (Gmelin).
5. Hirundo/rancicc.—Founded ou the “ Grey-ruraped Swallow ” of Latham, hut hy some mistake
D’Aubentou’s figure of the “ Hirondelle de Bourbon” is again quoted. The species is
CoUocalia francica (Gmelin) : cf. Hartert, I. c. p. 503.
6. Hirundo americana.—Founded on the “ Riifous-riiraped Swallow” of Latham. This may be
Petrochelidon pyrrhonota, but lias not since been identified.
7. Hirundo urbica, L.
8. Hirundo ;;anay«na.—Founded on tlic “ Pauayan Swallow ” of Latham {suprà, p. xxxvii).
9. Hirundo rufa.—Founded on Latham’s “ Itufous-bcllicd Swallow” {suprà, p. xxxvii), wbieh is
Hirundo erythrogasler, Bodd.
