Root perennial, sometimes a little creeping, fibrous,
caispitose, downy, brown. .
Culms many from the same, root, a foot, or a foot and
a half long, geniculate, erect, at the base only
oblique,, simple, round, or somewhatcompressed,
smooth, sti'iated, leafy.
Leaves three, four, to six inches long, patent, linear,
acuminate, carinate, smooth, the lower ones principally
; the superior ones nearly plane, below
smooth, above rough, green. Sheaths generally
long, striated, compressed, altogether, smooth.

Calyx of one leaf, (the terminal spikelet having two

surface, with many strife, smooth, green,
at the superior margin and apex diaphanous,
white, within flatfish, smooth.

one rather longer, a little concave, green, with
the margin and apex diaphanous, somewhat three-
