erecti vel rarius decumberites, subramosi, quod
plerumque per innovationes accidit, inferne radi-
cibus tomentosis, fusco-ferrugineis, densissimis
obsiti, supeme foliosi.
Folia numerosa, undique dense imbricata, subpatentia,
aquose viridia, ut htec -vix minus colore quam
. capsulte forma pomum référant, flavedine tincta,
inferiora sæpe fusca, et quasi madore' corrupt»,
omnia e dilatata basi auguste lanceolato-subulata,
flexuosa, subcarinata, per totum fere marginem
evidentissime serrdata, et infra medium prteci-
pue, pai-um revoluta, (fig. 5. 15. & 6.) nervo
viridi cortspicuo satisque crasso ad apicem usque
attingente prædita, et hic dorso serrata. Textura
rigidiuscula, reticulata tamen areolis minutis. (in'
/3. folia magis elongata sunt, siccitate egregie
crispât,a, dum in a. solummodo incurva.)
Fructificatio monoica.
Masc. terminalis, intra folia perigonialia ovato-lance-
olata, tenera, enervia, stellatim disposita, sita.
Fern, qute etiam vere terminalis ob innovationes sæpe
lateralis videtur.
Setæ solitariæ, erectæ, subpollicares, rubellæ.
Capsula parum obliqua, ante maturitatem exacte sphæ-
rica, foliis concolor et lævis, effoeta magis ovata,
fusco-lutea, longitudinal'!ter sulcata, sulcis peristo-
mii externi dentes numero æquantibus ; ore contracte.
Calyptra lateraliter fissa, junior subcylindracea,
(lig. 9.) tandem formam capsutæ maturæ sphoe-
ricam, basi latior magisque aperta, qualemJig. 10.
représentât ; margine oranino integi'o.
Operculum convexo-conicum, rufo-fuscum.
Peristomium duplex ; ext. dentibus sedecim, angustis,
cuneiformibus, rufis, transversim striatis ; int.
membranaceum, plicatum, apice laciniatum, laciniis
sedecim, æqualibus, bifidis, luteis, transversim
lineatis.
Stems casspitose, an inch or even an inch and a half
long, (in (3. sometimes three or four inches,)
somewhat flexuose, erect or rarely decumbent,
frequently branched, principally with innovations,
below thickly clothed with downy ferrugineous
roots, above leafy.
Leaves numerous on every side, subpatent, green, more
or less tinged with yellow, and resembling in colour
an unripe apple,. as much as the capsules
do in shape, the lower ones often brown, and
as it were injured by moisture, all of them from
a dilated base becoming narrow lanceolate-subulate,
flexuose, subcarinate, throughout their whole
length evidently serrulated, and, below the middle
principally, a little revolute, (fig. 5. 15. & 6.)
having a thick and green evident nerve reaching
to the very apex, where it is serrated on the back.
Texture somewhat rigid, with the areolie of the
reticulation minilte. (in (3. the leaves are more
elongated, and when dry remarkably crisped,
whilst in a . they are simply incurved.)
Fructification monoicous.
Male terminal, situated within the stellated perigo-
nial leaves, which are ovate-lanceolate, tender,
and nerveless.
Female terminal, or if sometimes found lateral, only
rendered so by the innovations.
Fruit-stalks solitary, erect, an inch long, reddish.
Capsule a little oblique, before it is ripe exactly spherical,
green, like the leaves, and smooth; when
ripe more ovate, yellow-brown, and longitudinally
sulcated, with as many furrows as there are
teeth in the exterior peristomium: mouth contracted.
Calyptra cleft on one side, in a young state cylindrical
» (fig- 9.) at length, on account of the round
figure of the capsule, wider and more open, as is
represented at fig . 10 ; the border is altogether
entire.
Operculum convexo-conical, reddish brown.
Peristome double; the exterior of sixteen, narrow, cuneiform
teeth, red and transversely striated ; the
interior membranaceous, plicated, and laciniated
at the apex, with the lacinite sixteen in number,
bifid, yellow, transversely marked with faint lines.
