E mbryo infernus, hilo oppositus, extra albuminosus,
lenticularis.
Root fibrous, fibres long, thickish, transversely articulated;
•Leaves all of them radical, from two to three inches
long, the interior ones erect, the exterior patent,
sword-shaped, yellow-green, thickish, succulent,
pellucid, beautifully reticulated with longitudinal
and transverse lines: the innermost leaf sheathing,
cleft on one side.
Scape from six to nine inches long, erect, cellulose, angular,
the angles variable in number, often seven.
Flowers thickly crowded into a hemispherical head.
Scales numerous; the exterior the largest, roundish,
green, smooth, empty; the interior gradually
smaller, narrower, ovate, membranaceous, beautifully
reticulated, brownish purple, at the apex
hoary with short, rigid, thickish, jointed, white
hairs; one-flowered.
Male F lowers discoid.
P e r ia n t h double, white, reticulated, with white hairs;
the interior tubular funnel-shaped, two-lipped at
the extremity, bearing stamens near the apex, and
in the divisions having a black tubercle: the exterior
two-leaved; the leaflets oblong, below united
into a very short tube.
Stamens four, inserted near the extremity of the interior
perianth, two near the point o f the segments,
two in their divisions. Filaments short, white.
Antliers blackish-purple, between ovate and
round, two-celled.

P e r ia n t h double; the interior with two, rarely three,
unequally sized leaflets, ovato-lanceolate, plane,
membranaceous, reticulated, white, distinct even
down to the base; a t the extremity hairy, hairs
white; beneath the apex having one or two tubercles
(the rudiments o f stamens ?); the exterior
ones oblongo-ovate, concave, purplish; the apices
hairy, the base connate.
| Ovary shortly pedicellate, two-lobed, the lobes roundish.
Style short. Stigmas two, much attenuated.
Capsules dicoccous, fruits unilocular, one-seeded, longitudinally
dehiscent.
Se e d , round, inverse, pendent, fixed to the upper internal
angle of the capsule, reddish brown, small.
I ntegument between coriaceous and membranaceous.
Albumen carnose.
Embryo inferior, opposite to the hilum, extra-albuminous,
lenticular.
