MELOBESIA MEMBRANACEA, Lamour.
G e n . Ch a r . Frond attached or free, either flattened, orbicular, sinuated or
irregularly lobed, or cylindrical and branched (never articulated),
coated with a calcareous deposit. Fructification: conical, sessile
ceramidia, scattered over the surface of th e frond, and containing a
tu ft of transversely parted, oblong tetraspores.—Named from one of
the Sea-nymphs of Hesiod.
M elobesia membranacea; minute, dot-like, very thin, pale purple, circular,
a t length confluent, attached to other Alg®; ceramidia one or
two, depressed.

H ab. Common on the leaves of Zostera, the fronds of Chondrus crispus,
&c. All round the coast.

D e s o r . Frond from half a line to a line in diameter, very thin and filmy, circular
at first, then, from several becoming confluent, more or leas lobed or irregular.
Ceramidia one or two, depressed.
