Gen . C h a r . Frond rosy or brownish-red, filamentous ; stem either opake
'a n d cellular, or translucent and jo in ted ; branches jointed, one-tubed,
mostly pinnate (rarely dichotomous or irregular) ; dissepiments hyaline.
F ru it of two kinds on distinct plants : 1, external teiraspores, scattered
along the ultimate branchlets, or borne on little pedicels ; 3, roundish or
lobed, berry-like receptacles (favella), seated on the main branches, and
containing numerous, angular spores. Ca l l it h a m n io n [A g ), from
KaXXos, beauty, and bagmov, a little shrub.

to p p ed ; plumules elongate, erect, linear-obovate, tru n c a te ; pmnæ
long and flexuous, th e lowermost simple, appressed, the upper

branches veiny, thrice as long as broad, of th e pinnæ once or twice as
long as broad, with contracted dissepiments.

lowermost pinnæ quite simple, moniliform, with contracted joints and acute
terminal ceUs ; the uppermost graduaUy longer and more spreading, branching
at the apex. Articulations of the branches veiny, from three to tour
times as long as broad ; of the lesser branches (or rachides of the plumules)
about twice as long as broad; of the pinnules oval, twice as long as broad,
with very contracted dissepiments. Tetraspores eUiptical, mostly solitary,
toward the base of a pinnule. Colour a fine purple-red. Substance membranaceous,
adhering to paper.
