with the hiftory of the country, and the manners of
the people ? Pictures are collected from their value , as fpeci-
-xnens of human excellence and genius exercifed in a fine art;
and juftly are they fo ; but 1 cannot help thinking, that they
would rife ftill higher in eftimation, were they connedted with'
the hiftory of the various countries, and did they faithfully
reprefeat the manners of mankind.
