These observations were taken
close to the low land, near the
mouth of the Pei-ho. The night
had been cold, and the morning
was still keen ;but unfortunately
there was no thermometer in the
boat; I suppose, however, that
the air was about 66°. At the
time these sights were taken, I
observed a vessel bearing N by
W, the lower half of whose sail
was inverted.
