
 
        
         
		Fur  of the  upper  part  conspicuously bicoloured, black for  
 nearly  two-thirds  of  its  length,  th e   remainder being olive  
 brown, with  the  extreme  tip s  darker.  F u r  of  the  throat  
 and  flanks  uniformly  brownish white,  of  all  th e   rest  of  the  
 under p a rt  black a t  base  and  brownish  white  a t  the  end.

 published  Forster’s  MS.  descriptions  and  notes  in  
 1844,  b u t Mr. Tomes, who has  found  in tlie Briti.sh Museum  
 two  kinds  of Bats  from  New Zealand,  believes  th a t  the one  
 which  is  a  Scotophilus  is  the  one  which  Forster  describe«.!,  
 on  account  of  the  number  of  incisors  he  indicates,  and  he  
 describes  it  as  Scotophilus tuhermlatus, P.Z.S., 1857,154, pi.  
 43,  and  he  also  describes  and  figures  th e   one  th a t  I  have  
 tlescribed  as Mystacina tuberculata, P.Z.S.,  1857,138, pi. 44.

 blackish  spot  externally.  Eyes  encircled  with  blackish 
 hairs.  Tail  short, much  swollen,  especially  in  th e  middle,  
 and  clothed  throughout with minute  pale  hairs.

 Size  of  the  common  mouse,  and  coloured  like  Mus  
 sylvaticus.
