According to Forster’s drawing it is called by th e natives
Doodooroo attoo, and was found a t Q ueen Charlotte’s Bay.
Mr. P e rc y E a r l found a p a ir o f this, what he terras very
rare, species, on th e coast between Tairi and Otago, South
Island. I t was called by the natives Kukuruatu.
Th is species differs from the other hy the lightness of
its general colour, an d by the toes being ra the r shorter.

Differs from the Australian species, H . fuUginosus of
Mr. Gould, by wanting the red ring round the eyes.

This bird, says Mr. P . Earl, is unknown in the North
Island. It is called in the South Island (Tairi river) Ka-
tuka by the natives, who consider it very rare and extremely
shy. They hold this b ird in great estimation for its
feathers to decorate th e ir persons. An old ch ie f offered
Mr. E a rl a large pig for the skin. Specimens o f this bird
were first observed by Capt. Cook, as inhabiting New
Zealand.

brown streaks, more or less perfect, down several o f the
feathers.
Length, 2 feet 2 inches ; bill from th e gape, 34 inche s ;

Young. Blackish brown, reticulated all over with y e llowish
white.
This species is th e Matuku or Maluku urepo o f the n a tives,
and the Crane o f the Missionaries. I t is also found
in Australia.

Greyish brown, with the middle of each featlier fuscous,
and some o f the feathers more or less marked with white
on the ed g e s; quills brownish black, with white sh afts;

darker and tinged with rufous ; breast and abdomen pinkish
white ; sides and sometimes the under tail-coverts irregularly
banded or streaked with brownish black ; iiropy-
gium white, irregularly marked with brownish black.
Length, 1 foot 3 inches ; bill from gape, 3 | inches ;
wings, 9 inches ; tarsi, 2 inches.
According to Mr. P . E a r l’s notes, this species is called
Ririwaka by the natives a t Waikouaiti, and was found in
abundance on the sea-shore in summer, b u t almost unapproachable
on account o f its shyness.

The natives, according to Dr. Dieffenbach, have named
this b ird Tiitumata. “ At Mataineka in South Island,”
says Mr. P. Earl, “ it is called Poako. They are generally
found feeding among ducks ; and a t the approach of d an ger,
u tter a peculiar cry, a t hearing which the ducks instantly
take flight. T h e young are mottled, even after
they fly.”

fulvous white, the former with a short brown line from the
culmen, another broader from the nostrils passing u n d e r the
eyes to the occiput, a third on each cheek running in an
oblique d irec tio n ; neck and breast fulvous white, with a
brown mark in th e middle of each margin ; back, scapulars
and wings fulvous, marked with blotches and narrow
interrupted bands of black ; abdomen fulvous white ; bill
