A full account of th e various varieties prevalent in this
species is given by Buller. N . montaiuis, Haast, N. super-
bus, Buller, and N esslingii, Souancé, are all considered to
belong to this categoiy. A very fine figure of th e variety
called by Buller N . supcrbus is given in Mr. Dawson
Rowley’s " O rnithological Miscellany ” (pi. 8).

No t only Dr. Finsch in Europe, b u t th a t good observer
Mr. Potts, in New Zealand, have given their opinion th a t
th is bird is not congeneric with Certhiparus albicillus, and
th e former separates it entirely from typical Orthonyx of
Australia, and proposes to revive Reicbenbach’s genus
Clitonyx in place of th e less • classical Mohov,a of Lesson.
For th e present, u n til th e common consent of ornithologists
drives ungrammatical names from th e n atu ra l system. Dr.
Finsch will forgive me for resuscitating th e la tte r title.
The German natura lists who set th e example of suppressing
unclassical names still hold th eir own on th e Continent,
and th e way in which th ey are being followed h y Ita lian
an d other ornithologists renders it by no means improbable
th a t ere long a modification of th e British Association rules
will require to be made iu this direction.

Dr. Finsch has w ritten an interesting account of the
structure of tliis bird to shew th a t it is not an Orthonyx,
h u t is really congeneric with Certhiparus novæ zealandiæ,
and he proposes to change th e barbarous generic name of
the la tte r into th e more classical one of Phyllodytes. I am
not purist enough to suppress th e old-fashioned name of
Certhiparus, and Dr. Finsch will have once more to change
th e genus himself, as Phyllodytes was bestowed by Wagler
on a genus of Beptilia in 1830.
