 Mr. G. R. Gray (l.c.) notices th a t th e specimen of P.
melanoleucus procured in New Zealand hy th e Antartic
Expedition, “ differs from th e Australian specimens by th e
white spot of th e wing-coverts,” and Dr. Finsch has gone
into th e intricate synonymy of th e species. Dr. Buller
does not seem to have examined th e specimen in the
Museum, and I therefore hun ted it up from th e large collection
which we possess of Cormorants in skin, and I
find th a t it constitutes a new species, wliich I name P.
fim ch ii in honour of Dr, Finsch, whose wonderful
acquaintance with New Zealand Ornithology is displayed
in all he writes on th e subject. I t may be described as
 follows:—
 P. similis P. melanokueo sed tectricibus alarum medianis
 exterioribus albis, speculum vel fasciam alarem formantibus;
axillaribus tan tum nigils, nec corporis lateribus u t in P.
 melanoleucus nigris, distinguendus.

Finsch, who remarks "E. vittata, if indeed a true Eudyptes,
is easily distinguished from all other members of the
Penguin gi-oup by its broad w hite superciliary streak, which
ru n s from th e base of the bill to th e back of th e head, but
which does not consist of elongated feathers.” The single
specimen a t present known was procured a t Dunedin, and
th e description was communicated by Captain F. W.
Hutton, one of tlie most enthusiastic of New Zealand
