 According  to Forster’s drawing,  this  b ird  is the He-wee-  
 go  o f th e   natives  o f D usky  Bay.  Mr. P .  E a rl  procured  his  
 specimen  a t  Waikowaiti,  as  it   was  swiinraing  about with  
 h is   tame  ducks.  I t   is  seldom  seen  on  the  east  coast  of  
 th e   South  Is la n d ;  it  is,  however,  more  abundant inland  
 and  on  the east  side :  and h e  states  th a t it is  known  by  the  
 name  of  Whiho.  T h e   bill  o f  th e   living  b ird  is  a   clear  
 ivory white, margined with  black.

 _ Upper surface  blackish brown,  with some  of th e  feathers  
 with  green  reflections,  and  margined  with  rufous,  others  
 varied  with  vermiculations  o f  the  same  colour,  especially  
 on  the  u pper  p a rt  o f the back and  sides ;  cheeks  and  sides  
 o f  neck  brown,  speckled with  dusky white ;  bre ast ferruginous, 
   varied with  obscure  spots ;  abdomen  brown, b an d ed  
 with  dusky white.

 Two  specimens  o f th is bird were  obtained  by th e   E x p e dition

 This  b ird  was  found  by  the  officers  o f  the  Frencli Antarctic  
 E x p ed itio n   a t Auckland  Island.

 b ill black  and legs  lead-coloured.

 T h is  species  is  very  similar  to  P . poliocephalus o f Australia  
 ;  b u t  th e  colours  are more prominent,  especially  on  
 the back,  where  it  is  also  tinged  with  green ;  the  buff  of  
 the  breast becomes in  this  species  dark  rufous. 
 T h e   ad u lt  specimen  was  procured  by   Mr.  P . E a rl  at  
 Tairi,  South  Island,  where it  was  called Totokipio.  The  
 young  of  this  species, when  a  few  days old,  are  light  grey  
 striped with  black.

 Dr. Dieffenbach says  that  the female  lays two white egj  
 in  the  crevices  of rocks  and  holes  n ea r  the  sea-shore.  Ti  
 natives  call  this  bird Korora.

 Glossy dark  blue  in  the middle of each  feather,  bordered  
 on  the  sides with  black,  and  the  base white;  sides  o fh e a d   
 an d   throat  dusky b lack ;  front o f the  ueck  aud beneath  the  
 body  yellowish  w h ile ;  a   broad  line  o f  pale  yellow  from  
 each  nostril  passing  over each  eye  and  extending  a   little  
 beyond  i t ;   u pper side  o f wings pale  blue,  the  un d er side  
 mostly white ;  bill  aud feet red,  th e  web  black.

 This  specimen  differs  irom  others  by  the  bill  being  
 shorter, more  elevated,  and  the supercilious  crest  commen-  
 ciug  a t  the nostrils  and  not  prolonged much  behind  each  
 eye  posteriorly,  as in  E .  chrysocome. 
 I t  is  a rare  bird  ut Waikowaiti,  and was known  there  by  
 the  name  of Tauake.
