adopting th a t of Limosa novæ zealandiæ, in preference to

GaUinago pusilla, Buller, Ibis, 1869, p . 4 1 ; Finsch, J. f .

Dr. Buller, who first described this species, brought a
specimen over to England, which he compared with th e
ty p ical examples of G. aucklandica in th e British Museum.
His results are fully stated in his work {p. 197,) and he
s a y s :—“ I have come to th e conclusion that, notwithstanding
th e great difference in th e length of th e bill, th ey are
referable to one and th e same species,—or a t any ra te th a t
till furthe r specimens have been obtained, it would be
unwise to separate them.” Judging however, from th e
measurements of specimens recently obtained in th e
Chatham Islands, {Cf Finsch, J. f 0. 1314, p. 197), I am
inclined to regard G. pusilla as a smaller species th an G.
aucklandica, which, from its constantly lesser dimensions,
may be well k ep t distinct.
