This beautiful fpecies is a native o f N ew Zealand, whe re it was difcovered by Sir Jofeph Banks.
Fabricius defcribes th e individual fpecimen in the Banklian cabinet, from which our d rawing w as ta k e n ;
th e only one moft probably in this co untry, with th e exception o f another treafured for many years
in th e colleaion o f the late M r. D ru ry , and which in confequence o f his dea th has lately fallen into our
own poireiRon, Tw o figures o f this in f e a accompany this defcription, one o f w hich having th e wings expanded
difplays the appearance o f th e upper fu rfac e; the other exhibiting th e lower furface is placed in

Papilio Vellida was difcovered in the firft inftance by Sir Jofeph Banks, Bart, a t the ifland o f Amftcr-
dam. B a t fince th a t time it has been met with a t fome o th e r iflands in the Pacific, as well as Southern
Ocean. In New South Wales tlie fpecies appears to be ra the r common.
W e have obferved a confiderable variation in the colours o f different individuals o f this fpe cies: In
fome the brown, which is th e prevailing colour in th e diik o f the wings, appears finely gloffed with a
micaceous blue, o r green, while in others the brown is p e r fe a iy fre e from any fuch appearance.
